Let Yourself Be Carried by the Current

The Tiber River

The Tiber River is the defining natural feature of the Otricoli landscape. With its winding course and, at times, powerful flow, it has shaped the surrounding hills for centuries, creating a landscape of remarkable environmental and historical significance.

Flowing along the western edge of the municipality, the Tiber runs beside the site of ancient Ocriculum. Together with the Via Flaminia, it formed one of the two great communication routes of Roman Italy: a vital waterway that connected the city with Rome, just 70 kilometres to the south, facilitating trade, travel and cultural exchange.

Equally important in the history of the territory was the San Vittore Stream, a tributary of the Tiber. From the 1st century BC, the banks of this watercourse became the focus of the expansion of Roman Ocriculum, which grew into one of the most important settlements along the river corridor. Today, the remains of this ancient city can still be explored within the Archaeological Park of Ocriculum.

Now, as in the past, the banks of the Tiber offer a unique opportunity to experience a landscape where nature and history coexist. Walking along the river means discovering a territory shaped by water, enriched by biodiversity and deeply connected to more than two thousand years of human history.
