The Churches
Â
Otricoli preserves an extraordinary religious heritage, the result of a history that stretches from the Roman world through the Middle Ages and into the modern era. Its churches and places of worship are far more than religious buildings: they are living testimonies to the artistic, architectural and cultural evolution of a community over the centuries.
Many of these sacred sites still bear visible traces of the different periods that shaped them. Roman building techniques, early Christian and Romanesque structures, medieval frescoes and Baroque decorations coexist in a remarkable dialogue between past and present, offering visitors a unique insight into the history of the territory.
Faith has left a profound imprint on the urban fabric of both Otricoli and the nearby village of Poggio. From the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, standing at the highest point of the historic centre, to the small rural churches scattered across the Umbrian countryside, each place of worship tells a story of local devotion, community life and connections with the major religious institutions of its time.
Although some churches have undergone destruction, restoration and reconstruction over the centuries, they continue to testify to the enduring spiritual identity of the area, rooted in traditions that date back to the earliest centuries of Christianity.
