The Castles of Otricoli

The history of Otricoli is closely tied to its strategic position overlooking the Tiber Valley and the ancient Via Flaminia, one of the main routes connecting Rome with central and northern Italy. For centuries, this frontier location led to the development of fortified settlements, defensive structures and castles that protected the territory and controlled the movement of people and goods.

Following the decline of Roman Ocriculum, the population gradually moved back to the hilltop, where the medieval village of Otricoli developed during the period of incastellamento, the widespread process of fortification that reshaped much of central Italy during the Early Middle Ages. Protected by walls and positioned on a rocky spur above the plain, the settlement became an important defensive outpost of the Patrimonium Sancti Petri and the southern frontier of Umbria.
