Overlooking Piazza della Repubblica, beside the Collegiata, Casa Papi reveals a remarkable surprise at its entrance: set into the walls on either side of the portal are two fragments of an ancient Roman circular altar, decorated with ox heads, floral and fruit garlands, and masks suspended from a carved ribbon running along the top. This refined and highly unusual reuse of ancient materials shows how the beauty of Ocriculum continued to live on in the fabric of the historic centre.
